What Does NAD+ Do?
Picture NAD+ as a rechargeable battery chip that shuttles energy around the cell.
It also gets used up by repair enzymes. Two big examples:
- PARPs: help with DNA repair
- Sirtuins: help control certain cell signals
When cells are stressed or older (in many lab models), they may burn through NAD+ faster or make less of it.
Does NAD+ Drop With Age?
In many animal and cell studies, yes: older tissues often show lower NAD+.
In humans, the picture is messier. It can depend on which tissue you measure and how you measure it. Scientists still debate how much of aging is caused by low NAD+ versus simply linked to it.
How Do Researchers Try to Raise NAD+?
Swallowing NAD+ itself is not the main story in human trials. The body handles it in complicated ways.
Most human studies use building-block molecules (called precursors) that cells can turn into NAD+:
- NR (nicotinamide riboside)
- NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide)
- Other B3-related compounds
A major 2023 review found that NR and NMN are usually well tolerated for weeks to months and can raise NAD+-related levels in blood. Effects on real-world health outcomes (energy, disease markers, performance) were mixed.

What Is Still Not Proven
- NAD+ is not an FDA-approved anti-aging drug.
- Higher blood NAD+ numbers are not the same as "you will age slower."
- Big, long human trials for IV NAD+ wellness claims are basically missing.
