What receptors does MT-2 hit?
MT-2 is non-selective across several melanocortin receptors:
- MC1R: strongly tied to melanin and pigment biology
- MC3R and MC4R: linked to appetite, energy balance, and sexual-function research questions
- MC5R: linked to exocrine gland biology in the literature
Hitting many receptors at once is why MT-2 became both scientifically important and practically complicated.
What did early human research report?
Small early-phase studies, including work associated with the University of Arizona research program, reported increased pigmentation with limited UV exposure and other systemic effects. Those studies helped define the pharmacology.
They did not produce a clean late-stage development package for MT-2 itself. Clinical development stalled as side-effect and selectivity problems became clearer.
Why did more selective cousins matter?
Later programs split the biology into cleaner tools:
- More MC1R-focused analogs for pigment/photosensitivity research lanes
- More MC3R/MC4R-focused analogs for sexual-function research lanes
That history is useful for beginners. MT-2 is often the parent idea. The later molecules were built to reduce the messy mix of effects.
How does MT-2 compare with KPV?
KPV is a tiny alpha-MSH fragment studied mainly for inflammation signaling and is generally discussed as lacking the classic melanocortin receptor pigment story.
MT-2 is a cyclic, potent, multi-receptor agonist with a broad effect profile. Same hormone family conversation. Very different research tools.

- Non-selective receptor activation means multiple systems can respond at once.
